Pregnancy is a journey filled with anticipation, joy, and, at times, uncertainty. Having the right support can make all the difference—and for many women across Central and North London, that support has come in the form of Ms Ayanthi Gunasekera.

With over 15 years of experience in obstetrics, Ms Gunasekera has dedicated her career to caring for expectant mothers and safely welcoming their babies into the world. Working within the NHS, she provides expert care to both low- and high-risk pregnancies, ensuring every woman receives the attention and guidance she needs throughout her journey.

What truly sets Ms Gunasekera apart is not just her professional experience, but her personal understanding of motherhood. As a mother of two, she knows first-hand the challenges women face while trying to balance work, family, and the emotional journey of pregnancy. This lived experience allows her to connect deeply with her patients, offering not just medical care, but meaningful support.

She is often described as calm and grounding—qualities that are invaluable during pregnancy and especially in the delivery room. She brings a practical, thoughtful energy to every interaction, helping mothers-to-be navigate decisions with confidence and clarity. Whether it’s discussing birth plans, addressing concerns, or guiding families through labour, her focus is always on ensuring a safe and positive experience.

Ms Gunasekera is committed to supporting each woman’s individual preferences when it comes to birth. She respects and supports your wishes equally—whether you are planning for a vaginal delivery or considering an elective caesarean section—providing balanced, evidence-based advice so you can make the choices that feel right for you.

Ms Gunasekera believes that every woman deserves a birth experience that aligns with her wishes, wherever possible. She works closely with her patients to understand their preferences, supporting them with both knowledge and encouragement every step of the way.

She serves as the RCOG representative on the OAAs Labour Pains Committee, reflecting her specialist interest in optimising pain management in labour and supporting woman through safe, informed, and positive birth experiences.

Background

She qualified from University College London in 2006, is a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), and an accredited Colposcopist. Miss Gunasekera is a Consultant at The Whittington Hospital, where she provides expert obstetric care, and she brings this frontline experience to her private practice.

Her other specialist interests include vulval conditions, colposcopy, and early cancer diagnosis. She is the Cervical Screening Programme Lead at The Whittington Hospital and

 

Miss Gunasekera has also contributed to national publications including Cosmopolitan, Mother & Baby, Women’s Health, and Reader’s Digest, helping women access clear, reliable health information.
