Appointment with one of our consultants for your early pregnancy scan.

Scanning at this gestation is to:

  • Confirm the diagnosis and viability of a pregnancy
  • Confirm the gestational age by measurement of the crown rump length
  • Exclude an ectopic pregnancy

Diagnose a multiple pregnancy. This is the best gestation to determine whether or not the twins share a placenta.

Discussion about diet, exercise and lifestyle considerations. Answer any questions you may have.

Referral for any tests that are required

Bloods & Tests

Haemoglobin level, blood group, rhesus and antibodies, sickle cell and thalassaemia, HIV, hepatitis B and C, rubella immunity, syphilis, vitamin D and toxoplasmosis.

10 weeks

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) for Downs syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome and Patio’s syndrome.  NIPT can be performed from 10 weeks of pregnancy.  Results usually take 10 days to two weeks to come back from the laboratory.  We recommend having this done at UDS (Ultrasound Diagnostic Services), 148 Harley Street.

11 – 13 weeks

Nuchal Translucency Test (scan and blood test) to be done at UDS (www.uds.uk.com). Miss Mellon recommends this be booked with either Basky or Aris who are foetal medicine specialists based at the Ultrasound Diagnostic Services.

This provides important information about your pregnancy. It is usually performed transabdominally but occasionally a transvaginal scan will be required to provide all the information.

Although most babies are healthy, all mothers have a risk of having a baby with a chromosomal anomaly including Down syndrome.

Measurement of the nuchal translucency (i.e. fluid behind the neck of the baby), together with knowledge of the mother’s age and measurement of some maternal hormones via blood test will allow estimation of the mother’s individual risk.

14-16 weeks

Appointment with Claire Mellon. This appointment will be to review the results of the tests you have had so far, and monitor you and the baby in the second trimester, this will include a growth scan undertaken by Miss Mellon.

This scan is performed transabdominally. It will confirm that the vast majority of pregnancies are developing normally.
