Heavy Periods

The amount that you bleed during your period varies and can change with each cycle.
Whilst heavy bleeding is common, it can effect your day to day living and have other health implications. If you feel your periods are heavy it is important to have a check up to rule out several different causes. Often simple treatments are available that can help you get back to your best.
 
It can be difficult to quantify if your period is heavy, but the following should be used as a guide:

 

  • Changing your tampon or towel every 1-2 hours, leaking past your sanitary wear or doubling up on towels.

  • Pass blood clots larger than a 10p coin

  • Avoiding commitments or taking time off for your periods

  • Often feel tired or short of breath

  • Bleeding for more than 7 days


What to expect from your appointment:

  • Consultation with one of our female consultant gynaecologists

  • Thorough history and pelvic examination

  • Transvaginal ultrasound scan if appropriate

  • Smear test and infection screen if appropriate
    Management advice e.g. non hormonal or hormonal medication

  • Prescription arrangement

  • Written medical report which can be posted or emailed to yourself and health

  • professional(s) of your choice

  • Notification of results of any test
